The UEFA Nations League is a football competition organized by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and was introduced in 2018. Its goal is to replace international friendlies, which are often seen as lacking competitive edge, with more meaningful and competitive matches between European national teams.
Format of the Competition
The Nations League is divided into four leagues: League A, League B, League C, and League D, based on the UEFA rankings of the national teams. Each league is further subdivided into groups, and the teams in each group play in a round-robin format. At the end of the group stage:
Teams that top their groups in League A qualify for the final phase, which includes the semi-finals, final, and a third-place match. Teams at the top of their groups in Leagues B, C, and D are promoted to the higher league, while the bottom teams in League A and B are relegated to the lower league. Teams in League C face relegation play-offs to avoid dropping to League D.
